The fun part is that 3D movies were the thing that was going to save theatres, precisely for that reason.
There have been three periods of time theaters have tried wooing movie-goers with 3D: The '50s, '70s and 2000s. In all periods only a handful of films, specifically made or converted for 3d, were released. Why haven't any of them succeeded? IMO, it's simply a matter of complexity. The viewer has to wear some special eyewear, the process to create the film is complex and expensive and theaters have buy the special projecters and possibly make physical adjustments to their facilities, which is also expensive. Until these factors can be overcome, 3D, as a viable media, will simply remain a curiosity.
