Looking for NYT Connections answers and hints? Here's all you need to know to solve today's game, plus my commentary on the puzzles.

    FULL STORY ======================================================================

Good morning! Let's play Connections, the NYT's clever word game that challenges you to group answers in various categories. It can be tough, so read on if you need clues.

What should you do once you've finished? Why, play some more word games of course. I've also got daily Strands hints and answers and Quordle hints and answers articles if you need help for those too, while Marc's Wordle today page covers the original viral word game.

SPOILER WARNING: Information about NYT Connections today is below, so don't read on if you don't want to know the answers. NYT Connections today (game #573) - today's words (Image credit: New York Times)

Connections today (game #573) - hint #2 - group answers

What are the answers for today's NYT Connections groups? YELLOW: CRUSH INTO A COMPACT SHAPE GREEN: FASTENERS BLUE: MARK AS COMPLETED PURPLE: DEPICTED IN DAL'S "THE PERSISTENCE OF MEMORY"

Right, the answers are below, so DO NOT SCROLL ANY FURTHER IF YOU DON'T WANT TO SEE THEM. NYT Connections today (game #573) - the answers (Image credit: New York Times)

The answers to today's Connections, game #573, are YELLOW: CRUSH INTO A COMPACT SHAPE BALL, CRUMPLE, SCRUNCH, WAD GREEN: FASTENERS BUCKLE, CLIP,
HOOK, SNAP BLUE: MARK AS COMPLETED CHECK, CROSS, STRIKE, TICK PURPLE:
DEPICTED IN DAL'S "THE PERSISTENCE OF MEMORY" ANT, BRANCH, CLOCK, MELTING My rating: Hard My score: 3 mistakes

Because its early January I am big into making to-do lists at the moment, so
I quickly got the blue group MARK AS COMPLETED .

Incidentally, when you write a to-do list do you sometimes add something
youve already done so that you can cross it off? Or is that just me?

Anyway, the other three groups were less straightforward. I went down a blind alley thinking SNAP, CRUMPLE, BUCKLE were to do with someone giving up, which I nearly did before earning myself a phew! after I thought belts could be the connecting theme for FASTENERS.

Meanwhile, we could have played Connections until next New Years Ever before
I got todays Purple foursome. Fezs off and flamboyant mustaches twizzled to anyone who got DEPICTED IN DAL'S "THE PERSISTENCE OF MEMORY". Yesterday's NYT Connections answers (Friday, 3 January, game #572) YELLOW: PARTS OF A FOOT ARCH, BALL, HEEL, SOLE GREEN: ONE DOLLAR BUCK, CLAM, SINGLE, SMACKER BLUE: KINDS OF MUSHROOMS BUTTON, MOREL, OYSTER, TRUMPET PURPLE: POT BELLY, HOLE, LUCK, STICKER What is NYT Connections?

NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games made by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that share something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green
is easy, yellow a little harder, blue often quite tough and purple usually very difficult.

On the plus side, you don't technically need to solve the final one, as
you'll be able to answer that one by a process of elimination. What's more, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little bit of breathing room.

It's a little more involved than something like Wordle, however, and there
are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For instance, watch out for homophones and other word games that could disguise the answers.

It's playable for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.

Connections today (game #580) - hint #2 - group answers

BREAKING, SURFING, TAEKWONDO, TRAMPOLINE PURPLE: -_COURT FOOD, KANGAROO, SUPREME, TENNIS My rating: Easy My score: 1 mistake

Seeing SURFING and BREAKING, TABLE and TENNIS, and CONVERSE and SUPREME (two clothing brands) gave me a brief pause, but I managed to complete todays puzzle in record time.

The only thing that slowed me down was the list of Olympic Events. Thinking
it was about recently introduced sports I immediately clicked BREAKING, which was introduced at Paris 2024, and TAEKWONDO which debuted in Sydney. But I incorrectly chose TENNIS, which was actually one of the original Summer Olympics events from 1896 to 1924 before taking a 60-year break and returning in 1988.

Sadly, breaking wont be part of the LA Games of 2028, joining a long list of discarded events including Tug-of-War, architecture, deer shooting and sculpture. Incredibly, American competitor Walter Winans was triumphant at both of the latter events, winning gold at London 1908 for shooting a running deer from 100 meters and at Paris 1912 for his horse figurine. There are times with Connections where you dont see a common theme among more than a couple of the 16 words. Other times theres an overabundance of similitude, as was the case today.

I struggled with two groups. I immediately thought vinyl records was the link to blue, INFO ON A RECORD, but they also include a SPINE, so I initially placed one there.

Meanwhile, I wasted another mistake thinking SPUR as in spur of the moment belonged with URGE, IMPULSE, and ITCH, whereas it was instead part of the
BARB group with STICKER, THORN and the aforementioned SPINE.

These niggles are, of course, the reason why Connections is such good fun to solve. Yesterday's NYT Connections answers (Friday, 17 January, game #586) YELLOW: FRANKFURTER BANGER, BRAT, LINK, SAUSAGE GREEN: STRIKE BOP, HIT,

Seeing GINKGO I immediately thought one group had to be about Japan. In my first guess I left out KARAOKE and included MOGUL instead my thinking is
that it was a trick, as there was a recent news story about a town in England called Stockport which is claiming to be the birthplace of karaoke, rather than Japan. But I was wrong. Obviously

The legend goes that a shopkeeper called Roy Brooke invented karaoke basically singing along to hits of the day in the early 1990s, but it was stolen by some visitors from Japan, who went on to market it around the
    world.

Karaoke is still massive in Stockport, where 12 pub teams compete against
each other every Monday to be crowned the Karaoke Champions of Stockport. And that bit, at least, is a true story!

How did you do today? Let me know in the comments below. Yesterday's NYT Connections answers (Friday, 24 January, game #593) YELLOW: CONTEMPLATE
